Continuing with our how to freezer cook series. Today we are going to discuss Tips and Tricks for Freezer Efficiency. You should be sure that your freezer and refrigerator are set at the correct temperatures. This is important to keep your food fresh and safe for consumption. Your refrigerator should be at 40 degrees and your freezer at 0 degrees. You can pick up a small refrigerator thermometer to make sure that it is at the correct temperature. If not you are at risk for a food borne illness.
A great tip is to keep a small bag of ice cubes in a plastic freezer bag in your freezer. This way if there is a power outage you will know that the temperature was above 32 degrees F. The ice cubes will have melted and will no longer in their original shape. If this happens you need to throw away EVERYTHING in your freezer. Also, if your ice cream is too hard to scoop easily the freezer is too cold. If your ice cream is too soft then it is too warm. This is a tip that my appliance delivery guy gave me and it really works. If the ice cream is too hard your items will get freezer burn.
You don’t want your hard work of freezer cooking (or your stockpile) to be damaged but eating something that is not safe is even worse. Another tip is that your freezer actually runs best and most efficiently when it is full – consider freezing a jug of water to keep it running at its best.
