Chapter 1: What are office hours and why do you need them?

What are office hours?

I bet you know when you can take your child to the doctor. Immediately your Pediatrician’s office hours came to mind.

I can’t tell you how many times I have held the phone in my hands and dialed that number at 9 am on Monday morning!

Now, let me ask you another question – when can your customers call you? Do they know when they can place an order, or stop by and shop in your “store”?

When can the consultants you recruit call you and get their questions answered or talk through a business problem they have?

Most of us know when we have events scheduled, what time and day our meetings are held, and what days we have open to book events.

But do you know when you are going to do the paperwork from those events? What about follow up phone calls, placing your orders and restocking inventory?

Office hours answers the need we have to set aside business time to take care of business.

What are office hours for?

Many of us as independent consultants are available “anytime”. Is that really what’s most convenient for you and your family? Setting office hours give you the control over when you “work” your home based business.

The first thing you will need to decide is how many hours you need to work in an “office” to compliment the business you are generating from your events and meetings.

Another benefit to setting office hours is that your friends, family and customers will start to take your business seriously.

How many times have your friends and family called your home-based business a “hobby”?

I work my business on Wednesdays from 8 am – 6 pm. On my “work” day I dress in a logo shirt and jeans and head to the basement.   I hire a babysitter to take care of my children for the day.

In the beginning my friends would stop by to play or call to chat on the phone. Quickly they began to respect my work time and my work because I did.

Finally, establishing office hours makes you accountable for being in your office focused only on your business. The first few days or weeks of office time will most likely be spent organizing and reading the backlog of paperwork you have not given your full attention.

After this “honeymoon” period you will be left with organized work and left over office time. This commitment to work your business will allow you the time to focus on generating new leads and customers.

How many office hours do I need?

For me this time commitment has remained steady at about 10 hours a week.

10 hours seems to be enough time to maintain my business paperwork, offer premium customer service, and invest time in pursuing new leads and business opportunities.

I am going to base the rest of this book on the 10 hour a week model. You may find this is too much or too little time, but it is a great place to start.

Along with deciding when you are going to work in your office, you will need to decide how many events you want to hold in a month and when those events will take place.

Again, you are sending a message to your customers that you are in business and you take your business seriously!

Here is what 10 hours in the office has looked like for me over the years.

Working Full Time: When I started my business I was married without children and worked fulltime. I worked my business 2-3 evenings a week and on the weekends.

Without Kids or an outside job: After 14 months I quit my “fulltime job” and worked from home “fulltime” on my direct sales business closer to 20-30 hours each week during the day.

With a child: One and a half years later my son was born and I started working my business during his naps (which were few!!) and in the evenings.

This was a rough time for our family and it was not until my son was 10 months old that I set aside regular business hours again.

I hired a babysitter to come to my house so I could focus on my work during work time – and focus on my family when I was not working. During this stage I hired a home schooled teenager who was wonderful! She cared for and played with my son from 8-6 on Wednesdays.


With 2 children: Next our beautiful baby girl was born and my office hours were tried again.  After a few months of maternity leave we continued to have babysitters watch both children on Wednesday’s from 8-6.

With school age children: Ahhh, heaven! J Business hours are easily accomplished during the day with children off to school. The challenge in this stage is the evening event hours and snow days!
