Wrap the colored crochet cotton(yarn) around the balloon. You can cover it completely or leave open spaces. When finished, secure the string end under another layer so it isn’t loose.  Tip – be sure to secure the string so it doesn’t unravel.

Ingredients
  • Dixie Crystals Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
  • Balloons
  • Colored cotton crochet string (can also use yarn or ribbon if you prefer)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring cup, bowl and spoon
Instructions
  1. Blow up a balloon to the size you want your egg or basket. Tie the end and add a piece of string about 8 inches long. You’ll use this to hang it to dry when the project is complete.
  2. Wrap the colored crochet cotton around the balloon. You can cover it completely or leave open spaces. When finished, secure the string end under another layer so it isn’t loose.
  3. Mix ½ cup of warm water with 1 cup of sugar. Mix completely until all sugar is dissolved. The mixture will be thick with a glue-like consistency.
  4. Put the string-wrapped balloon into the sugar water mixture until it is completely wet. Make sure all sides are coated with the sugar-water mixture. (NOTE: Larger balloons will require more sugar mixture to hold their shape.)
  5. Hang the balloon to dry over the sink or outside.
  6. Once the string is completely dry (this can take up to 24 hours depending on how much string you use and how thick the string is), pop and remove the balloon.
  7. Shape your basket and add ribbon, Easter grass and little bunnies or chicks to make it festive.
  8. If you want to store and keep your eggs, spray them with clear spray paint.

(NOTE: Larger balloons will require more sugar mixture to hold their shape.)  The fun thing about this project is you can make a basket or egg any size you want. You can even use a punch size balloon to make a HUGE string Easter Basket!

Hang the balloon to dry over the sink or outside. Tip – We used a hanger and tied them to the hanger and then hung over our sink to dry.  You can also hang in a shower that is not being used if you have a guest bathroom.

Once the string is completely dry (this can take up to 24 hours depending on how much string you use and how thick the string is), pop and remove the balloon.  Another trick is that you can actually put a treat inside the balloon and then when you pull out the popped balloon the treat will remain inside.  Of course that just depends on if you want to remove the treats later or not.

Oh how cute. I haven’t started making anything for Easter yet and I need to get my rear in gear because it’s one of our favorite holidays. I’d love to let the kids help me make some sugar string eggs and baskets. Thanks for sharing.

Your sugar string baskets came out absolutely adorable! I love how colorful they are, and that you included easy directions. I tried something like this one but the directions weren’t clear so I messed it all up. Plus I tried it with flour I think, I didn’t know you could make sugar glue. So neat!
