Check out these Ways to Save Money on Gardening. Do you simply love your garden, but feel like you’re wasting not only too much water but money as well? More than likely, you’re probably right.

Most gardeners may have pristine and gorgeous looking flowers and plants in their garden, but waste thousands of gallons of water every year in the process of maintaining them. Fortunately, there’s a number of small little changes that you can make that will make a big difference over time.

Ways to Save Money on Watering Your Garden

If you are looking for tips and tricks to make your budget go a bit further, then you already know a garden is a great place to start. But, that can also cost money, so we are here to help you save a bit more today!

    Make Sure Not to Overwater

This sounds silly, but overwatering is the number one reason why many gardeners waste money in their gardens. Overwatering your plants not only costs you more money, but it’s not beneficial to the plants, causing bacteria and fungal diseases while stressing their root systems.

    Add Plenty of Mulch

Adding mulch to your garden is more than about making your garden look that much more attractive. Mulch also helps the soil around your plants to maintain moisture so that you aren’t watering as often. Organic mulch also helps to add organic material back into your garden’s soil overtime.

    Install a Rain Sensor

When deciding on installing a rain sensor, or an automatic rain shut off device, you’ll save yourself not only from overwatering but on your monthly water bill as well. Installing it will cost you around $200, but it will pay for itself within the first couple of years. It’s hooked up along with your irrigation system controller and then mounted in a place that is exposed to rainfall.

    Mow Your Grass Taller

Many people like to have their grass cut extremely short, but this has a negative effect not only on your lawn but causes stress on your plants as well. Mowing your grass at a taller height allows for the grass to provide shade for the soil, leaving behind more moisture for the roots of your plants. The season, type of grass, and the growing conditions play a role in what height you should cut your grass.

    Use a Rain Barrel

Gardeners that install rain barrels near their gardens save a lot of money by using rainwater. This is also important because rainwater does not contain all of the chemicals and salts that come in our ground or city water.

    Use More Efficient Emitter Technology

How old would you say your irrigation emitter is? This includes your rotors, sprinkler heads, and drip irrigation emitters. If it’s several years old, you can check with an irrigation expert on finding what your best options are to help save you money.

    Stop the Leaks

If you notice that you have a leak with one of your hoses, outdoor faucets, or emitters, make sure that you get them replaced. Even though you may consider it to be only a small leak, after one year you may have wasted water of up to 6,000 gallons.

As you can see, there are a number of small changes that you can make in your lawn and garden that will save you from wasting a bunch of water throughout this growing season. Do you know of any other money-saving ways while watering your garden that you’d be willing to share?
