I often get asked, Can you freeze sour cream? The answer is Yes and No. I know that sounds funny but YES you can freeze sour cream. Will it be as good as if it had never been frozen? NO! However, it really depends on how you plan to use it. I personally do not freeze sour cream on a regular basis however it can be done.
By freezing you can extend the life by 4 to 6 months. Just write the date you put it into the freezer with a permanent marker so you know how long it has been there.
How To Freeze Sour Cream – You can freeze it in the original container or an air-tight container however by freezing IT WILL affect the texture. It will turn it into the consistency of cottage cheese. So if you are going to use it for baking then it would be ok but if you are using it in its original form then I would not recommend it.
Also, another helpful tip is that you can extend the life of your sour cream by storing the unopened container upside down in your fridge! Several readers have told me this so I will be trying it for sure.

I make a sour cream enchilada sauce and it freezes just fine. Maybe it’s because it is mixed with other ingredients and then bake it.
You can also store OPENED containers of sour cream upside down in the fridge and it extends the life of your sour cream significantly!
Great idea! Thanks, Ange!
I am always nervous mine will leak, so I smooth out the sour cream with the back of a spoon. This simple steps helps it last longer and no yukky moldy parts!
For sure store opened cotainers of sour cream upside down extends the live and if you buy the kkind that after you open is it stars to seperate and gets liquidy that stops. I buy Daisy and the lid is very good and tight and much thicker, both the lid and the content!!!
Will try my hand at freezing – I’m planning to use in a recipe with other ingredients OR mixing it with mayo and spices for veggie dip. With me luck! I just hate to throw away three quarters of a container.Nicole
What about freezing in ice cube trays? I do it for butter milk and egg nog for easy 2 Tbs “go-to” additions to sauces and drinks. It should work ok for sour cream too… right??
