Want some help on How to Encourage Purity in Teen Relationships. Making sure your teenager stays pure in their relationships is honestly out of your hands.

    How to Encourage Purity

I know that sounds frightening, especially when you think about what is happening in today’s world. Teenagers actually do want to listen to what adults have to say, but not necessarily adults telling them what not to do. There are ways that you can encourage purity in your household, without simply telling your child no to having sex.

Every family has different values, so the guidelines below are reflective of the average Christian household. Even if you're not a parent who pushes for abstinence, the tips below can still be helpful to teach your child about safe and healthy relationships.

    Start talking about sex early

It’s crazy how young kids are these days when they hear sexual comments or jokes from other kids. The public school will begin teaching your child sex education as early as 3rd and 4th grade before they hit puberty.

Wouldn’t it be better for your child to learn about sex from you before they see or hear about it elsewhere? This can be extremely uncomfortable and awkward but fight through it, because your kids need to learn about their bodies from the people that helped bring them into this world.

    Firm dating Guidelines

If you say it’s ok for your child to date, that’s great. Make sure they know your guidelines and expectations, along with punishments if they are not kept. Here are a couple of guidelines to help get you started.

    • Encourage group dating
    • Having a younger sibling go on dates with them
    • Never be allowed in a room alone together
    • Doors left open and no cuddling under blankets

    Parent-teen involvement

Being more involved with your teens can never hurt. Just make sure you don’t smother or coddle your teenager. Teaching your teen how you struggled as a young adult, and ways you survived those years, are something that they want to know. They just don’t like feeling controlled all the time.

Sex is healthy and okay - in the right situation

Teaching your teen that sex is a good and beautiful thing is the way to go. Sex is a gift and demonstration of love for one another, by saving yourself for your spouse. The rough and nasty sex they see on the internet is not love, and not how sex was intended. Teach them about the beauty of sex in the right context.

    Extracurricular Activities

Having your teens in extracurricular activities is a great way to burn off energy and hormones. Plus they can create great friendships and relationships with coaches and staff that can encourage them in their walk with purity.

These are several ways to help teach and encourage your teen to stay sexually pure in their dating relationships. Which ones will you use to help your teens through some of the toughest years of their lives? What other ways in your household do you encourage purity?
